“There is nothing — absolutely nothing — half so much worth doing as simply mesing about in boats.”
SALCOMBE DINGY SAILING A
nd who doesn’t agree with that heartfelt quote from much loved children’s classic The Wind in the Willows? But what if you
live right by one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the South West and yet never have chance to enjoy actually being ‘on the water’? How wonderful would it be to have such an opportunity, whether young or old… well, thanks to some exciting collaborations involving Salcombe Dinghy Sailing, Sports England, local business sponsors, and the Kings- bridge Dementia Friendly Group – now might be your chance! “Since May, we have been
working with students from 5 local schools running sailing sessions to enable and encourage safe, enjoyable use of the water by those who might not otherwise have such opportunities”, explained Zoe Crook of Salcombe Dinghy Sailing. “There was no cost to any of the schools who participated; we supplied our fleet of sailboats and provided all the equipment; and funding from our local business sponsors covered the costs of an additional instructor meaning more children could take part.” “For some, their first time sailing with us was their first time on the estuary they live by; their first time going to the beach. To be able to share the enjoyment of those things many of us just accept for granted was rewarding and humbling in equal parts.”
The huge success of this year’s pilot season has
“we wish to use the skills and equipment we have available to give something back to our community.”
encouraged Zoe and husband Ross, an RYA Senior Sailing Instructor, to build on this for 2020 with some ambitious plans to facilitate even more schools partic- ipating and open up the joy of sailing to many more young people for whom the costs would otherwise be prohibitive. “We hope to team up with Sports England who can assist with grants for equipment and activities taking place out of school hours and are hoping that with continued support from local businesses, we can reach our target of £40,000 so that we can expand what we offer. For example, we would like to set up a Club at weekends to run sailing courses; not only for pleasure and to increase ability, self-confidence and responsibility, but also quali- fication courses which could lead to teenagers becoming Instructors themselves at 16 years.” “Sailing qualifications don’t just improve skills on the water – they
increase and open up employment opportunities, especially in a coastal area like this. As of September 11 2019, Sailing has been reintroduced on to the GSCE, AS and A level physical education (PE) activity lists and students can see real opportunities ahead for a career on the water.” If you would like to find out more about the scheme;
