a certain elitism towards joining a tennis club which for some has caused it to be too daunting to approach a club and give the game a go. The Lawn Tennis Associa- tion realise this is one of the main factors that has caused the decline in tennis and have been trying to think of ways to open up the game. With the support of the Devon


LTA and the Tennis Foundation, four keen tennis players Richard and Lisa Miller, Lesley Healey and Verity Robinson approached South Hams Council with an idea, a ‘Community Project’ that welcomes everyone of all ages and abilities to tennis, whether you are three or a hundred and three, able or less able, begin- ner or pro, standing or impaired. sessions that includes free use of tennis balls and floodlights (that SHDC kindly managed to coax into working again) throughout the darker winter months. The Social Sessions are thriving, as are the friendly fun tournaments and the Big Tennis Weekends, the last one taking place in the Love Your Park day which was a big success. Free coaching is also given to children’s clubs - Beavers, Cubs, Scouts etc. Funding has been applied for and ideas are afoot all the time. As soon as an inside venue can
