THE BUTCHER, THE BAKER AND

THE CANDLESTICK MAKER. Local History

BY HOLLY TRUBSHAWE Curatorial Assistant

KINGSBRIDGE COOKWORTHY MUSEUM

With this edition of The Post focussing on food and drink, we are delving into a small section of the food and drink shops and trades in Kingsbridge. The museum is fortunate to hold many old trade directories, which enables us to track ownership of businesses and family names from the 1830s onwards. Alongside our collection of photographs, newspapers and other local documents we can use this information to map changes in businesses over time.

THE BUTCHER The Shambles in Kingsbridge has a long association with butchers. It was the original market site for Kingsbridge and the building can be seen in the earliest known map of Kingsbridge of 1586. In 1914 the lord of the manor rented the shambles out to local butchers. There were also stalls for greengrocers, a fishmonger and other non food stalls. Lidstones Butchers (at 87 Fore Street) are the closest butcher to the shambles today. They previously had stalls in the shambles. We also know from trade directories that in 1830 there were at least 4 butchers on Fore Street. John Hewitt, John Hext, John Smardon and William Shellabear (also spelt Shillabeer). William was based at Number 2 Fore Street, a site which housed a butchers shop for over 100 years. Other Kingsbridge butchers have
