with Kim Bloomfield of BLOOMING ORGANISED DECLUTTERING

• HOME MOVES • LIFE ADMIN “I

might need that, it could be handy, what if I can’t find

another one…” We encounter lots of reasons why someone might not want to part with something. Often the more compulsive behav- iours surrounding holding onto something derives from a change in circumstances, a shift in lifestyle and in some cases, trauma. Reasons are personal and run deep. Uncertainty accounts for a lot of decisions when it comes to possessions and the things we choose to have in our homes, especially when items have been hard-earned, are of high-value or are especially hard to come by. Similarly, when clients grew up in an era when possessions were few, scarce or hard to afford, they are held onto for longer, the same can be said for all ages, especially when economically there have been hard times. That said, we are now in a time when few things are hard to come by in terms of availability, but behaviours have not adapted to accommodate this shift. At Blooming Organised, we are passionate about reusing as much as we can and keeping ‘waste’ to a minimum, in order to create the space our clients wish to achieve, this means parting with and rehoming all sorts of things. ‘Waste’ brings us onto an interesting discussion; recently we have encountered a trend of stockpiling amongst some clients as we continue to be in a period of un- certainty around, dare I say it, Brexit. I doubt you expected to read an article on organising and life management

to find the dreaded B-word made an appearance! It is not uncommon behaviour for people to have ‘spares’ of items at home, especially food and toiletries. We have supermarkets to thank for an acquired pattern of ‘buy one, get one free’ and similar deals – we are now conditioned to pick up extras and it is made financially attractive for us to do so.

“Recently we have

encountered a trend of stock- piling amongst some clients as we continue to be in a

period of uncertainty around, dare I say it, Brexit”

The Guardian recently reported

that research shows that 1 in 5 people have a pre-Brexit stockpile of food, drink or medicine worth £380. With the average being closer to £1,000 in stored goods. The Royal College of GP’s are urging people not to stockpile, though I’m sure understand their patients concerns. Tinned foods seem to be accounting for 75% of the items stockpiled in a recent poll by the Observer/Opinium, with 45% being medicines. Predictions at this stage, are very much that, predictions, as no-one really knows how this whole situa- tion is going to conclude. Perhaps disappointingly to the reader, there is no official or unofficial advice on this matter – other than perhaps conducting some common sense. Whilst the country is evaluating what

matters most, why not take some time to reconsider your own ‘world’ and what is really important to you. And if you feel overwhelmed, maybe we can help.

What does a professional organiser do? Projects as ever, are incredibly varied, just as we like it! Recently we have been asked to:

• Plan a special birthday party for a client’s loved one, from afar.

• Undertake a scanning, archiving and shredding project for a local business.

• Assist a business with final preparations for a high-profile bespoke sports event abroad.

• Produce detailed furniture floorplans for a re- tired couple downsizing into an apartment.

• Declutter with a couple who by their own admission have a habit for online purchasing; we are reclaiming space in their home, making it safer for their mobility needs & a nicer space to live in.

• Oversee a large home unpack project in North London, so the family can easily move in.

• Catalogue a large collection of children’s toys from a client who would like them photographed and valued ahead of deciding to sell.

• Help a client inform utilities with their change of address ahead of moving house.

• Work with the owner of a hotel, to create some personal family space whilst re- organising the guest suites.

• Declutter the spare room for a wheel- chair-dependant client to move into, freeing up their room for essential bathroom adaptations to ease their daily living.
