Remember we said ‘young or old’? Together with
Sports England and Kingsbridge Dementia Friendly Group, Salcombe Dinghy Sailing will be offering sailing sessions completely free of charge to those aged over 60 or anyone living with dementia – that can be the person with dementia or their carer(s), in which event the age threshold would not apply. Two hour sessions in a Wayfarer (so no hanging off
a trapeze!) will be on offer, again with all equipment provided and full RYA-qualified instructor support. “It is hoped that carers will have a chance to spend some time keeping themselves active physically, without the 24/7 worries and responsibilities of everyday. For dementia sufferers, it will provide a new, stimulating experience or perhaps stir memories of their own more active times.”
The last run of sessions proved hugely popular, with all those attending gaining so much from them. Do look out for dates of the next run of sessions or get in touch with Zoe so she can make a note of your interest. Zoe and Ross both feel passionately that the won-
derful environment we have should be available to as many as possible; whatever their age, means, or ability. “Fortunately, through our business, we are privileged to enjoy the water whenever we choose so we wish to use the skills and equipment we have available to give something back to our community. All our free sessions are run through our not-for-profit business and charitable status may evolve in the future. The next step we are exploring is becoming an RYA Sailability and a RYA Onboard Training Centre allowing us to extend the opportunities to even more individuals.”
