Who’s been eating my nuts? Nuts are attractive fodder for many animals
and November is the month to get out and identify who’s been eating what in the hedgerows and the trees.
● WOODPECKERS will jam hazelnuts and pine cones into crevices in tree bark, so they can hammer them more easily.
● DEER skin conkers with their cheek teeth, discarding the skin.
● WOOD MICE nibble a circular hole in hazelnuts, SQUIRRELS split them neatly in half whilst BANK VOLES gnaw off the pointed end.
● Both SQUIRRELS and BIRDS love eating pine cones stripping the scales from the cones leaving piles of stripped scales under conifer trees. However, look closely - the scales of cones eaten by squirrels have clean-cut edges whilst those made by birds are ragged where they have been pulled out.
