Known for its creative comfort food, waterfront fare and independent restaurants steeped in historic charm, Alexandria has dozens of new dining spots waiting to be discovered. From au- thentic Mexican offerings to beer gardens where food is at the forefront, 25 new concepts are available that showcase the city’s evolving and innovative culinary scene.

Just-opened in January 2019, Urbano 116 has quickly become Old Town’s hottest must-try restaurant. Award-winning Chef Alam Méndez Florián expands his Oaxacan culinary vision from his acclaimed Mexico City restaurant to his first concept in the U.S. as part of the team behind Common Plate Hospitality’s newest ven- ture on King Street.

Opening in the winter of 2019, Chop Shop Taco will also serve unique takes on tacos in a ca- sual setting that was converted from an actual 1970s automotive chop shop. Casa Tequila Bar

and Grill opened in Carlyle in August 2018, in- fusing their passion for tequila into an extensive drinks menu.

Named after the patron saint of beer, Augie’s Mussel House on the Patio will open on King Street in Old Town this fall following a 2018 renovation and a pop-up beer garden.

Open since January 2019, Hops n’ Shine boasts an extensive drinks menu that includes more than 50 beers on tap, as well as moon- shine and a decadent food menu.

Other new offerings to the area include: The Garden in the former Greenstreet Gardens lo- cation in Del Ray, a beer garden with outdoor games, murals and a canine-friendly ambi- ence; Lost Boy Cider in the Carlyle neighbor- hood, the first urban craft cidery in Northern Virginia; and Aslin Beer Co., a small batch brewery in Alexandria’s West End that offers a tasting room and private event space.

Expected to open in 2019 and already offering fine dining in cities across the South, Oak

Steakhouse plans to carry its success into North Old Town.

It’s always Oktoberfest at Village Brauhaus! Building off its medieval predecessor, John Strongbow’s Tavern, the King Street locale promises a warm, festive atmosphere and both modern and traditional German-Austrian food.

Coming to Alexandria’s Carlyle neighborhood in 2019 is Whiskey & Oyster, the latest restaurant by husband-wife duo, “Mango” Mike and Donna Anderson, and their business partner, Bill Blackburn. Designed to be a festive local watering hole, it will optimize its warm-weather opening with outdoor seating and a raw bar for a full-blown seafood experience.

In March 2019, Carpe DC Food Tours launched a new food tour in Old Town designed to high- light Old Town through food, history and cul- ture, focusing on how the area has evolved over time and where it’s headed. Public tours will be offered Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Private tours are available upon request.
