52 PROFILES St George’s School for Girls

Founded by the pioneers of women’s education in Scotland, and celebrating its 130 year, St George’s is the only all-through girls’ school in Edinburgh. Here we promote educational excellence both inside and outside the classroom. Our distinctive ethos encourages each girl to be herself in an environment totally focused on our girls’ needs. Through a wealth of opportunities and an ethos promoting high expectations, girls gain confidence and develop ambition so that they may achieve their full potential. Taught in an environment free from gender stereotypes,

girls are encouraged to develop their inner voice and a self- assurance that their opinions matter. They go on to explore careers as wide ranging as astrophysics, computer game design, theatre, medicine, engineering, law, teaching, publishing and academia. We have girls as young as three and as old as eighteen. Boys are welcome in our nursery up to the start of their preschool year.

The school is set on an attractive eleven-acre parkland campus in the quite residential area of Murrayfield, with all

facilities and sports fields on site. With a junior and middle school size

of around 350 girls (up to the end of S1) and a whole school of around 750, St George’s is relatively small, and our girls receive more teacher attention than they might get elsewhere. For their primary education our girls are taught in small classes with their learning enhanced by

an extensive Outdoor Learning programme and specialist teaching for modern languages, music, PE, art and drama. We also offer an extraordinary number of extra-curricular. Examination results in both Scottish and English qualifications are consistently outstanding. Girls combine GCSEs at 16 years, with the Scottish examination system of Highers and Advanced Highers in the Sixth Form, because of the combination of academic rigour and flexibility that this blend of the two systems offers.

Open Mornings on Saturday 28 September and Wednesday 2 October. Visit our website www.stge.org.uk or please get in touch with the Admissions Manager, Tel: 0131 311 8008, Email: admissions@stge.org.uk
