EDUCATION

23

requires you to put in 3 choices, and return the form to your 1st choice nursery along with a copy of your child’s birth certificate and proof of address. If you opt for a Partnered Provider they will provide you with an application form to complete.

Whilst nursery places are not subject to catchment areas, school places are. So bare in-mind if your child attends a nursery attached to a primary school that is not in your school catchment area your child will not be able to attend that school. You can apply for an out of catchment place before your child is due to start school but these places are usually very limited.

Primary School STARTING BETWEEN 4.5 AND 5.5 YEARS OLD

If your child attends a City of Edinburgh Council nursery or partner provider childcare you will receive a letter in October about school entry procedures. If you do not receive a letter - check the Edinburgh Council website for registration details.

The table below shows which year children will start primary school:

Child born between:

1 Mar 2015 – 29 Feb 2016 1 Mar 2016 – 28 Feb 2017 1 Mar 2017 – 28 Feb 2018 1 Mar 2018 – 28 Feb 2019

Child will start school in: August 2020 August 2021 August 2022 August 2023

FIND YOUR CATCHMENT SCHOOL For every Edinburgh Council address there is one catchment non-denominational Primary School and one catchment Roman Catholic Primary School. You will find an interactive map on the City of Edinburgh Council website “education and learning” pages. Put in your postcode and the interactive map will provide you with your catchment non- denomination Primary and Roman Catholic School.

WHEN TO REGISTER

If you wish your child to go to a school run by the City of Edinburgh Council, you need to register at one of your catchment schools during registration week – normally in early November. The Primary 1 (P1) intake limits are then decided in January based on the number of catchment children registered at each school during registration week. For all stages other than entry to P1 you should contact the school directly.

HOW TO REGISTER YOUR CHILD FOR SCHOOL Times for registration at individual schools will be advertised on the Council’s Website or you can find out by calling the school office. Otherwise you will need to make an

appointment. You must take these documents to your catchment school during the allocated times of the registration week: • your child’s birth certificate • proof of Roman Catholic baptism, if registering at a Roman Catholic school (if applicable)

• your Council Tax demand notice for the current year, in your name

• a utility bill (i.e. gas, electricity, landline telephone or broadband) in your name and dated within the last 6 months

If you are unable to provide any of these, ask the school staff for advice.

DEFER ENTRY TO PRIMARY 1 STARTING BETWEEN 5.5 AND 6 YEARS OLD

If your child is born in January and February you can request for deferred entry and this will automatically be approved. You are eligible for a further year of funded early learning and childcare. If your child is born between 15 August and 31 December Edinburgh council will consider your request for deferred entry. You are not automatically entitled to extra funding. Before you apply Speak to your child’s nursery to discuss deferring entry to school and speak to your catchment school. You should still follow the procedure for starting school, in case the application is not successful.

NON CATCHMENT SCHOOL REQUEST It is the Council's policy to give the highest priority to ensuring that all catchment pupils who want to attend their catchment school are allocated places. Non-Catchment placement request forms are available on the Council’s website in early November and need to be submitted by December 24th. If a denominational Roman Catholic school is oversubscribed with catchment children, priority will be given to catchment baptised Roman Catholics. It is also the Council’s statutory duty to grant non- catchment places where there are places available. A council committee decides on an order of priority for all non-catchment placing requests in the following order: • Pupils who have brothers/sisters at the requested school. • Pupils who are resident in the Council area, and who do not have siblings currently at the requested school.

• Pupils who are not resident in the Council area, and who do not have siblings currently at the requested school.

Beyond this the committee decides on the basis of the shortest, safest walking distance from home to school. You should note that if your child is allocated a P1 place at a Primary School outside your catchment area, at S1 transfer you will be reserved a place at the secondary that serves your address, and not at the secondary which feeds from the primary school.
