The City of Edinburgh Council sends a letter to parents in early November, telling you which school has been allocated. You are only guaranteed a place in the school if you live in the catchment area. If you live outside the catchment area you need to make a placing request and you will only receive a place if one is available. To request a place in a school in another catchment

area complete the form at www.edinburgh.gov.uk/ placingrequest. Applications open in early November each year. The closing date is 24 December with decision letters posted in early March.

MOVING ADDRESS AFTER THE START OF SESSION The City of Edinburgh Council’s School Placements team is responsible for the allocation of places for entry to P1 and S1 up until the start of session in mid-August. For entry in to any other year group or if you are moving to Edinburgh after the start of session, you must apply to your catchment school directly.

OTHER CITY OF EDINBURGH COUNCIL EDUCATION OPTIONS Edinburgh Council offer free school places for specialist education in Music, Dance and Football. Information is available on the Council’s website. Edinburgh Council also offer schools that support children with additional learning requirements outside mainstream education.

GAELIC SCHOOLS

If you live in the City of Edinburgh area you can register your child for P1 at Taobh na Pàirce, (Gaelic Immersion Primary School) without any prior knowledge of Gaelic. If you join Taobh na Pàirce after P1 starts or in P2-P7, your child must have knowledge of Gaelic similar to others in the year group. Pupils from Taobh na Pàirce transfer to James Gillespie’s High School automatically if they wish to continue Gaelic studies. You can also apply for James Gillespie’s High School if your child has completed his/her education at another Gaelic school. ■
