The world’s largest public science festival, Pint of Science, returns to Birmingham this year with experts from Aston University and the University of Birmingham talking about their research in pubs and bars around the city. As part of the three-day


festival between 20 and 22 May, thousands of researchers around the world will discuss their research through talks, demonstrations and live experiments in local pubs. Researchers from Aston


University will be appearing at Cherry Reds, The Church, 1000 Trades, the Gunmakers Arms, Dig Brew and Birmingham Whisky Club, talking about everything from brains in a dish to digital legacy. Tickets are available from the


Pint of Science website, with each evening costing just £4. Pint of Science was founded


in 2013 by Dr Praveen Paul and Dr Michael Motskin, who wanted to bring back the personal touch to science. Dr Motskin said: “Science can


often get lost in translation, leading to the spread of pseudo- science and myths. The best way to overcome this is for people to be able to talk to scientists directly in a familiar environment, such as in a pub over a pint.”


Midland car giant Jaguar Land Rover has announced an 8.4 per cent increase in the total number of vehicles it sold in the UK in the past year. The company sold 118,108


vehicles in the UK between April 2018 and this March, which bucks the trend in the industry, which as a whole saw a slump in sales of 3.67 per cent. Jaguar’s best seller was its


compact sports utility vehicle (SUVA) E-Pace model, of which 11,142 were sold in its


first full year of sales. The best seller for Land


Rover was the Discovery Sport, which saw 19,569 vehicles sold. The Discovery Sport has


been a consistently strong seller since its introduction in 2014.

Airport flies high with growth plans By Dan Harrison


The new boss of Birmingham Airport set out the organisation’s ambitious growth plans at an exclusive address to Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce patrons. Chief executive Nick Barton


revealed to guests at a Chamber patrons’ lunch details of a £500m masterplan, which includes plans for the airport to grow by 40 per cent to 18 million passengers a year by 2033. Mr Barton took the reins at


Birmingham in December, having


previously held senior positions at Luton and Stansted airports. He told guests that although Birmingham’s single runway was sufficient to cope with current and future demands, the passenger terminal needed significant investment. Mr Barton said: “The runway is


good enough but the terminal isn’t, so the terminal needs to be improved. There is an investment plan, which is to move from 13 million passengers to 18 million passengers, with a chequebook required to spend around £500m to achieve it. Investing several hundred million in


the terminal will get you up to 18 million and beyond, if required. In the coming years, we’ve got around £150m of front-loaded investment planned to go into the airport, mostly into the terminal building. “We have a big development


starting soon increase the size of the departure lounge. We need more space, we need more customer service facilities and we need to improve security to make it physically bigger, as technology is changing for security reasons.” The lunch was hosted by law firm Squire Patton Boggs.
