them 100%. We stayed for most of their set before heading back down to the main stage to try our luck in catch Blackberry Smoke’s set. We waited until everyone in line was in and found a spot in the back to catch what in my opinion is the best Southern Rock band making music today. I normally like my spot right up front, but was just happy to be in the hall for this set since my key was the wrong color.

Smoke performed a blistering set (all

too short) of their music and the crowd was rocking along and singing every word to every song. Far too soon the show was over and we headed out to explore the ship and see what others musical madness we could find. One of the best things about musical cruises is the fact that people you never see jamming can be caught playing music with each other all over the ship. We went and caught the tail end of Jimmy Hall’s set before a quick snack and the welcome aboard pool concert with Devon All- man and his special guest Duane Betts. I have to admit I booked this cruise on the hopes of seeing my musical hero Dickey Betts jam with Charlie Starr (a man can dream, can’t he?) and when Dickey’s doctor told him no and he had to cancel, well, to say I was disappointed

Devon Allman with Blackberry Smoke

was an understatement. The promoters worked hard and are to be commended for being able to secure Devon and Duane as re- placements. I had seen both Devon and Duane solo but never together and its simply magic when they join forces and bring all that talent to the stage. As a life-long fan of their father’s music, I am so glad they are carrying on the musical legacy and spreading their gift of music with the world. I don’t want to infer for a minute that this is some Allman Broth- ers remake. Both of these men are talented and amazing singer/songwriters who just happen to be the sons of two of the greatest artists to ever grace the stage. Their sets included some of each of

their solo work and some songs from their new project, the Allman Betts band (the new record is done and soon to be released, with a world tour to follow) and yes some of the hit their fathers made for us to enjoy. It was the best of all worlds as I saw it, and I am so glad they could join the cruise. After a late-night snack, it was time for some sleep before day two.
