WINE by Michael Buffalo Smith

The Walking Dead Blood Red Blend 2016 ($18.99) You say you are a Walking Dead fan? Prove it by drinking a glass or three of the official wine of the TV series. This Blood Red Blend drips with intense, bold flavor. The aroma and pallet are both robust with unyielding character,

with dominant notes of raspberry, cranberry and cherry to flesh out the structured tannins. This tasty blend is composed of 10% Malbec, 40% Merlot, 30% Cab. Sauv. and 20% Petit Verdot. Aged for ten months in French and American oak barrels. Nice taste and finish. Pairs well with zombie burgers.

Six Sigma Ranch and Winery Tempranillo Reserve 2015 ($48) Hailing from Northern California’s Lake County, this red combines earth and tobacco aromas with dark fruit. The pallet brings to mind black cherries. Lots of spice and cranberry. Very smooth. Lovely long finish. Pairs well with pizza, also with wild game like elk or venison, but also serves

as a fine wine for sipping without food. 25

Sierra Pines Merlot 2017 ($2.98) From the “everyday collection,” this wine can be had for less than $3 a bottle. Not since my high school days of Boones Farm and Mad Dog have I seen such a low price. Of course, this is only one of the many great deals I found at Lidl, the German based market that just recently opened near my house. Sim- ilar to Aldi, Lidl has some deals that leave even Aldi in the dirt. This merlot is a

medium-bodied red with heavy notes of fruit on the nose and pallet- specifically, black plumb and cherry. Soft tannins and a great clean finish make this California wine a major value for the money. My recommendation? Buy a case to have on hand for everyday con- sumption and save the high dollar wines for special occasions. I have read several negative reviews, but I must say, to me, it’s not a bad wine at all, especially with spaghetti and meatballs, but also pairs well with beef, lamb or veal.

Question: If you are not having a full meal with your wine, what is your favorite snack food to pair with a nice bottle? A particular cheese? Grapes? Hummus? One submission will be chosen at random to win a bottle of Foghat wine!
