The Rocky Horror Picture Show

true to life depiction of an outlaw country singer that is part Waylon Jennings, part Billy Joe Shaver. It proves once again just how hard it can be to have a relationship when you are a performer in the public eye. 18. Gimmie Shelter (1970) Documentary about the Rolling Stones last weeks of the 1969 tour that ended with the murders at Al- tamont. Southern recording fans will love the look inside the Muscle Shoals Sound Studios and the Swampers. 17. The Buddy Holly Story (1978) Gary Busey did a fine job of acting out Buddy Holly’s life story, and the music is great too. 16. American Graffiti (1979) Before Star Wars, George Lucas was busy filming the ul- timate teen movie, starring Harrison Ford, Ron Howard, and Suzanne Somers. Some breakout acting and a huge soundtrack of hits. 15. The Last Waltz (1976) Totally awesome concert film stars The Band, Bob Dylan and a who’s who of mid-70’s rock music. 14. Great Balls of Fire (1989) Dennis Quaid, Alec Baldwin, Winonna Ryder in the Jwerry Lee Lewis story. Look for a cameo by drive-in legend Joe Bob Briggs. 13. Stop Making Sense (1984) An innova-

tive concert film by Dave Byrne and the Talk- ing Heads. 12. Crossroads (1986) Steve Vai, Jamie Gertz, and Ralph Macchio in a blues story based on the legend of Robert Johnson that features some off the chain guitar work. 10. Ray (2004) Jamie Foxx nails the charac- ter of Ray Charles in this fine film. 11. The Blues Brothers (1980) John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd take their Saturday Night Live characters to the big screen with huge success in a movie chock full of super- star cameos from Ray Charles to John Lee Hooker. Too bad the sequel sucked. 10. Walk the Line (2005) Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon are both excellent as Johnny Cash and June Carter in this biopic. Another one that “got it right.” 9. This is Spinal Tap (1984) is perhaps the greatest parody of rock and roll life eve rfilmed. It is no less than a classic, spawning real albums by Christopher Guest and com- pany that had many people asking where the parody ended and the real band began. 8. Freebird the Movie (1996) Live concert film that found the southern rockers opening for the Rolling Stones at Knebworth in Eng- land on a massive stage. 7. That Thing You Do (1996) Tom Hanks did an outstanding job of creating a fictional 1960’s pop band (The Oneders) , and telling their success story. A really, really good movie.
