Wimborne History Festival 2018
This year, Wimborne History Festival commemorates 100 years since the end of WW1, and the centenary of women gaining the vote, with an exciting, free, living history event on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd July.
The fi eld at Allenbourn School will be transported to 1918 with a military encampment, including soldiers’ quarters, recruitment offi ce and hospital, complete with WW1 ambulance.
Artillery, an ammunitions tricycle and RNAS airboat crew complete the static displays. Arena events include foot and rifl e drills, artillery and bayonet demos, and talks on all aspects of a soldier’s life, from rations to equipment.
WW1 themed Punch and Judy, storytelling and interactive activities from code breaking and spy training, to poppy making and toy soldier casting, will keep children (of all ages!) entertained.
The last airworthy WW1 Bristol Scout bi-plane will grace Wimborne Square and WW1 artefacts, Pathé fi lm clips, and artists in residence, will accompany a trench warfare exhibition in the
Allendale Centre.
Visitors
can join the women’s movement at the Suffragette stand on the Minster
Green, make a placard and join the town march, but watch out for the Edwardian policeman!
Ten ‘Silent Soldiers’ will walk around the town, each representing a soldier from Wimborne who gave their life in the First World War. The true story of two local soldiers is also portrayed in the play ‘The Gathering’ on Saturday evening, and for avid historians there is a wide-ranging talks and lectures programme.
