The highest and the lowest! We are now well into the summer Track and Field season. Various County Championships have been done and are due. We also have athletes attending Regional Meetings and eventually the Nationals.
So our best in the past month was when Melissa Courtney (bronze-medallist from the Commonwealth Games in Australia) became British Champion when she won the Vitality Westminster Mile in May in a time of 4-35, beating 18 other invited, high-quality runners.
In the South of England AA Championships in Bedford in June, Jamie Grose achieved the silver medal in the SM3000m Steeplechase in a killer of a race! His time was a Personal Best (PB) of 9-37.72 – and he is still improving! In the same meeting, Jed Skilton also earned a silver in the u20M800m in 1-59.73. With his intensive training, Jed has already broken a number of Club records this year.
In SportCity Manchester in June, Jack Roach (son of our HJ coach Mark and already an England international) won the North of England SMLong Jump with 7.14m, well below his best.
In the Dorset Schools’ Championships at King’s Park in June, ten PAC athletes became champions in 11 events, achieving 18 PBs. William Rabjohns set a new
Championship Record in the Year 7 Boys’ 1500m with 4-37.2. As a result, ten of PAC have been invited to compete for Dorset Schools’ in the
South-West Schools’ event
in June. Louis B won the Year 7 Boys’ Long Jump with 4.98m which ranks him 4th in the UK!
Now for the grass roots. We have completed half of our League commitments with mixed success. Our best are very good, but we need more commitment from our regular trainees. So we staged our own QuadKids event (for u11s) in June and were impressed by the quality and enthusiasm of our youngest. One of our coaches, having helped with their Athletics coaching in 2017, has returned to Broadstone Middle for the whole of this summer term too. Both these concepts are aimed at developing good basic techniques which can then grow with the young athletes. Our coaches understand this and so are willing, even if only one child comes to training, to give that person their full time and advice. Who knows what the future holds for that athlete ?
