Local Student Raises Funds For Peru
In the summer, along with 17 other students from QE, I will be travelling to Peru to build classrooms and
community buildings and teach English to the children living in poverty. We will also be assisting with
wildlife conservation programmes to protect biodiversity as well as learning about the culture and lifestyles of different tribes.
I have arranged many fundraising events to cover the costs of this expedition including two successful quiz nights – one raising over £1,200 – bag-packs, raffl es and group walks (practising for hikes out in Peru and getting to know one another). I have run stalls at local events, however to raise signifi cant funds, I needed a really big challenge. I decided to cycle 125 miles from my home in Broadstone, Poole to Pontypool, Wales on Saturday 12th May.
I left at 6am on Saturday and rode to the top end of Dorset, having my fi rst break at Stourhead.
The fi rst 40km was really hilly however I enjoyed cycling down country roads in the morning and gained some speed. I completed 1/3 of my journey in just over 2½ hours – well ahead of schedule.
After cycling up hill after hill, I reached my next stop which was just outside Bath. I rode through the two tunnels under the city of Bath and along the railway path to Bristol, and made my way to the Severn Bridge crossing to Wales.
My journey was further extended by 25 miles due to a detour through the welsh countryside towards Newport, just before my destination, Pontypool. I was welcomed by family and friends – after ten an a half hours of riding I felt elated but extremely tired.
This experience was challenging but one I’ll never forget. I have decided to give the remainder of my donations to a charity in Cusco, supporting disabled children. I raised £1,200 for this challenge and hope to reach £1,500 with additional sponsorship.
