Broadstone Neighbourhood Watch It feels like the theft of data from large companies is
becoming a daily occurrence.
Only today while writing this, it was reported that the personal information belonging to six million was obtained from the computers of a well known electrical retailer, and as I listened to a news article it seems that this information is being sold to criminal gangs for as much as £25 per individual, who then use the information to send ‘phishing emails’ in an attempt to persuade people from giving out the more sensitive information such as bank account passwords and PINs.
Whilst many of us are becoming more savvy about ignoring such emails, the scammers are becoming more sophisticated too. Their emails mimic those from the companies they pretend to be and caution is therefore advised whenever an unsolicited email is received asking for ANY personal information.
We have been told about a scam pretending to be BT, another allegedly from HM Revenue and another supposedly from an energy watchdog. I recently had texts and emails telling me that my TSB account has been compromised – I have never held an account with them, but if I had I would have been tempted to reply as it was so convincing. email, don’t reply to it. Instead go to the website of the company using a search engine and NOT using a link or address from the email, and either call or email the company using the offi cial methods asking if the correspondence is genuine.
On the ground, there have been a number of disturbing cases of antisocial behaviour in Broadstone including around the library and a small group of young men using the roofs of shops as climbing frames. Some of this behaviour is illegal and should be reported to police – if it’s a crime in progress, or someone vulnerable is at risk (i.e. a child) this should be treated as a 999 case, otherwise please use 101 or the Police website, giving as much information including names and descriptions. Please do not share photos or names on social media especially if the individuals are under 18, as tempting as it may be. It is important that a pattern of behaviour is built up by the police if they are to reach the required threshold for action and to ensure that the individuals concerned can be treated fairly and, if appropriate, obtain any help they need to deal with their behaviours.
