True Geraniums Advice for gardeners from Chestnut Nursery
There’s nothing more satisfying than growing hardy perennial geraniums. We’re talking about Cranesbills, most of which are mat forming ground covers with prolifi c saucer-shaped fl owers, all summer long.
Here on the nursery the volunteers enjoy producing a wide selection, some are well known stalwarts of the gardening scene and others a little more unusual. All of them are very attractive to wildlife.
Geranium ‘Rozanne’ grows vigorously in the garden border or container, producing stunning violet-blue veined fl owers with white centres. At 60cm high it has achieved many gardening awards and never disappoints. ‘Dusky Rose’ has proved a popular variety this year for its striking baby-pink fl owers over a long season on gorgeous matted burgundy foliage. It’s a versatile plant for all conditions and stays compact at 15cm high.
Indeed, geraniums come in an array of shapes and sizes. For something a little more unusual, why not try some of the species forms. Geranium Incanum for example, an unusual bushy perennial from South Africa, with fi nely cut foliage that gains some coppery bronze hues in cooler months and superb magenta fl owers in spring and summer. It thrives in poor soils and usually grows 20cm high but will cascade and given the chance even climb.
Finally, and by no means least, Palmatum (pictured) from the Canary Islands is the king of all Cranesbills. Imagine a giant Herb Robert with a robust evergreen large rosette of deeply divided leaves to 30cm wide. In summer, dark-centred purplish-
pink fl owers 4cm wide are born on large branched infl orescences to 1.2m tall. It brings a lush exotic effect, but is surprisingly hardy.
In all we grow a dozen or so types of hardy geranium, we look forward to showing you them all.
