Councillor Update

The Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Shadow Council, consisting of all 120 councillors, met for the fi rst time on Thursday 6th June at Bournemouth University. However, it was not a totally harmonious meeting. A majority of Christchurch councillors walked out shortly after the start to avoid any risk of compromising a possible judicial review, leaving the remaining councillors to deal with the main business items, namely to elect chair and vice chair of the Shadow Council, chairs and vice chairs of committees, and to approve a constitution. True to form, all places were taken by one party and so the democratic defi cit currently being experienced in Poole Council is now multiplied.

An issue we have raised before in connection with the new council is the increased centralisation of power and the potential lack of local involvement in decision making. The new Dorset unitary Council retains existing parish and town councils, while in the new Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, only Christchurch will have parish councils. Not only will it retain those that exist under the present arrangements, but will be creating additional ones to give all their residents a say in the decision making process. All our efforts to get Poole Council to consider this option have been rejected by the current administration. We believe this will put Poole residents at a disadvantage when it comes to having a say. If, for example, Broadstone were to have a parish council it would mean an additional cost in the form of a precept, but this would be ring fenced to be spent within Broadstone and enable our residents to have a say in their own governance. We are happy to continue to argue for a parish council if you think it is the right thing to do, so please let us know your views.

The strength of community feeling in Broadstone has always been high, lending support to a variety of events and activities. Now that the new ward boundary proposals have been submitted to the Local Government Boundary Commission for England it is clear that Broadstone Ward could see a signifi cant change: it is proposed to take the whole of Pinesprings out of Broadstone. We argued against this proposal when it fi rst came to light, but we were not listened to. However, we continue to support Pinesprings residents in their fi ght to remain a part of Broadstone and ask you all to add your support when the public consultation takes place during July and August. The fi nal decision will be announced by the Boundary Commission sometime in October.

Broadstone Post Offi ce is due to move into its permanent premises on 2nd July. They have worked tirelessly under diffi cult circumstances and we would like to thank them for the support they have given to the community and for hanging on in there. The BT building in the Broadway, voted Broadstone’s ugliest building is due to be given a face lift in the near future. We hope it will be more than just a lick of paint on a door panel! We will be requesting space for a community noticeboard to replace the one that used to be outside the old post offi ce. The Broadway seems to be bucking the national trend as we have seen a number of new businesses open, adding to the quality of the retail offer. We look forward to welcoming others once the McCarthy & Stone building is fi nished and the planned moves of Costa and the Post Offi ce have taken place.

Our next surgery takes place on Saturday 7th July in Broadstone Library from 10am until midday.
