Poole Athletic Club

Helping each other: For our athletes to get to training or to competitions until they are independent and can drive, there is huge reliance on parents. This takes the form of daily care, kit provision, positive psychology, taxi service and much more. So we need to thank all the parents of our athletes for helping them and the Club by their gift of service, time, and cumulatively, quite a lot of money! The Club would not exist without this willingness and commitment; and the same of course from the coaches and support staff, all of whom are volunteers.

Records: We’ve had a number of Club records broken recently, mostly by the endurance group. These include Jed S running u20M 800m in 1-54.70, Jamie G running (and hurdling!) the 2000m steeplechase in 6-09.06, William R racing u13B 1500 in 4-29.00 and Josh Smith racing u15B 800m in 2-05.06. These were achieved at venues as far apart as Millfi eld and Manchester.

Skittles and Buffet Social evening: Our kit sponsors, Foresters Friendly Society, recently invited Club members to enjoy a relaxed, Friday evening at the Hamworthy Club, Canford Magna. A good turnout repaid their effort and justifi ed their expense! We enjoyed the banter, the friendly atmosphere, the brilliant buffet, the energy of both young and not-so-young, and

game playing. It was also an opportunity to distribute new T-shirts to the 68 athletes who have so far represented the Club this season. Naturally they also took the chance to publicise their company and attract new members and investment! Thanks to them.

League matches: All the fi ve Leagues in which we are involved have now had their fi rst matches. The signs are promising that we will do well but, as has happened before, we needed to make a stronger start in two. Athletes needed to plan and commit earlier, so that we could fi ll all the competitive spaces available for each match. Those who have competed have had a great attitude, judging from the 20 personal best (PB) performances achieved by our 11 athletes in the fi rst UKYDL Lower Age-Group (LAG) match at Crawley in April! A clash of fi xtures did not help and we hoped to do much better in Match 2 at Horsham in May. Our largest match, the South-West League 1 at Exeter on in May, against 11 other clubs, resulted in us fi nishing 5th – but we intend to push for ‘top three’ by season’s end!

Dorset County Championships: These have just been staged at King’s Park in May. We have multiple champions! More details in our July report!
