Gardening Tips for June I hope that by the time you read this, the weather

has settled down and is looking like summer. Two things that will be growing well are weeds and the lawn. Hoe weeds off regularly and cut the lawn at least once a week.

Baskets and containers can all be put out now and don’t forget to deadhead, water and feed regularly. If trailing plants get long and untidy, pinch out the ends and then they will bush out. Stake tall plants before they collapse.

Many spring shrubs will have fi nished fl owering by now and can be pruned if necessary. Camellias will have lost their fl owers and may be showing signs of frost damage. They can be pruned to remove any damage and also to keep in shape. Magnolias should only have a light pruning in summer while in full leaf, any more should wait for winter. Rhododendrons should also be only lightly pruned. If the leaves of your camellias are looking black on top, this is due to aphids which are on the undersides of leaves. Therefore if you want to spray it needs to go under the leaves. The black mould can be scraped off dry leaves but it takes a long time! After pruning feed them with an ericaceous feed. If you have gaps in the borders, think about fi lling in with annuals. Plants like cosmos, which tend to fl ower a bit later, will give a nice splash of colour.

The foliage on bulbs can be removed now and if they are in containers can be removed and dried off to replant in the garden next year. Forget-me-nots need removing as they go over, a quick shake will mean new plants for next year, or if you don’t want them to seed remove them earlier. Euphorbia and pulmonaria plants should be dead-headed now and the foliage of pulmonarias can be cut off to encourage fresh leaves. Primroses can be split and replanted elsewhere.

Both runner and French beans can be planted now. If you have a problem with blackfl y on broad beans,

pinch out the tips. Tomatoes, courgettes and ridge cucumbers can be planted outside by the middle of the month. Tomatoes will sprout side shoots very quickly and these need removing regularly. Water and feed regularly too or they will develop blossom end rot. Hang yellow sticky pads among them to deal with white fl ies. Shade your greenhouse, either with special paint or mesh on the outside to keep temperatures down and make sure you have plenty of ventilation as high temperatures can cause problems. Train and tie in long shoots on blackberries and other hybrid berries.

Don’t forget to look out for bird nests before cutting any hedges and shrubs and keep them well supplied with water and food.

Help! Volunteers Needed:

Our volunteers have been busy for over 20 years. We regularly tidy and plant the fl owerbeds along the Broadway, and in Dunyeats Road and Grange Road. We also plant up the large containers and the bed in front of the library with bedding twice a year and order tubs and baskets for the businesses around Broadstone.

We are looking for some more volunteers who could spare a couple of hours, usually on Wednesday mornings, to help us. You don’t need to be experienced gardeners, just able to use a trowel and secateurs! Please get in touch if you can help on 01202 695873 or email robinanddenisehill@ gmail.com. We have a plant sale on Saturiday 9th June in front of Lloyds Bank and will also be at the Broadstone Family Fun Day on 1st July, so come and have a chat.
