Councillor Update

Local councillors are working hard together on the new Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch Council, expected to take over provision of your services from May 2019.

Approval has been given by Ministers in Whitehall for changes proposed last year – called Local Government Reorganisation. In practice, the urban South East Dorset councils (Bournemouth, Poole & Christchurch) will become one council instead of three. The rural councils in Dorset (North Dorset, West Dorset, East Dorset, Weymouth & Portland, Purbeck and Dorset County Council) will become another council replacing six. Residents should notice no effect on services. It is expected that the vast majority of existing ward boundaries will remain but recommended changes will be formally consulted on by the Boundary Commission in public this summer, so everyone can have their say on electoral arrangements.

The improvements bring better value for your council tax and reduced cost of employing staff. Council’s main budget items are looking after senior citizens in rest homes and educating children with special needs. Council leaders, through the Dorset Enterprise Partnership, should gain more business infrastructure funding. Our new council will be deemed ‘City’ status and will be taken more seriously than a smaller council. Poole Council will legally cease to exist from April 2019 according to the statutory instrument that is scheduled for Parliamentary approval in June 2018. The new council will take over in May 2019. In the transition period, Poole Council will continue to operate.

Your councillors are working to ensure services already mentioned, plus recycling the refuse, administration of welfare, planning and all other services continue without interruption during the transition period.

A Shadow Authority will begin to meet in addition to Poole Council. Your currently elected councillors – including three for Broadstone – will continue to serve you on the Shadow Authority and Poole until the next local elections in May 2019.
