On Saturday 12th May we held our fi rst Community Event for Objective 4 and took part in the Keep Britain Tidy ‘Great Plastic Pick Up’. We had a great turnout and removed over 20 bags of litter from around Broadstone in less than two hours. Thank you to everyone who participated.
To update on the fi ve objectives required to reach Plastic Free Community status:
1. Council Commitment – we have applied for the Broadstone Neighbourhood Forum to be recognised as a body similar to a parish council. If successful, this objective will be close to complete.
2. Local Businesses – discussions have been taking place with local businesses such as Molly’s, Griff’s Family Butchers, &Keep and Broadstone Minerals. Some have completed their three plastic-substitutions, others are well on their way. If you own or manage a business and would like to make steps to reduce your plastic usage, please contact us.
3. Plastic Free Community – a plastic-free checklist has been created and community spaces are being ‘audited’, enabling collaborative discussions to take place regarding reducing Broadstone’s plastic footprint. Energy and enthusiasm for the
initiative is high. A plan is in place to speak to the Broadstone
schools regarding plastic-free initiatives.
4. Plastic Free Community Events – the Great Plastic Pick Up has taken place.
5. Steering Group – an initial steering committee has taken place and a Resolution for the town will be drawn up for presentation to the Neighbourhood Forum Committee.
