95 GET INVOLVED

One of our ambitions is for this year of commemoration to involve the whole community. We already have a really talented and hard working management team but we need more volunteers to join us and, in particular, are seeking people to fill the following roles.

EVENTS & PROJECTS MANAGERS: You are likely to be well organized, possibly with previous experience, & will work with the team leaders to help organize specific events.

PR PERSON: To assume responsi- bility for all media relations.

FUNDRAISING MANAGER: We have already made good progress with fundraising, but if you have experience in this area we would like to hear from you.

MERCHANDISING MANAGER: This year long project presents some great merchandising opportunities. We need someone experienced to organise and take responsibility for merchandising a range of products.

LOGISTICS: Have you had expe- rience dealing with Insurance, health & safety, car parking, local authority licences etc? If so, we would like to hear from you.

VOLUNTEERS MANAGER: To make all these events happen will require a large number of volunteers during 2020. If you have had experience organising, managing and motivating a team of volunteers you could be just the person we are looking for.

If you think that you can help and would like to get involved, please send brief details of your experi- ence and areas of interest to: projectdirector@dartmouthmayflower.uk

Mayflower 400 Q & A.

Q: With so many different projects & events, what are your priorities?

A: Heritage and leaving a perma- nent legacy, are both major ambi- tions of the Dartmouth Mayflower team especially with the Walking Trail & the Replica Ship in mind. Community involvement & edu- cation are also high priorities, and if we can achieve these ambitions and provide fun for residents and visitors at the same time, we would consider that a good result.

Q: How many visitors are you expecting to visit the town? A: This is impossible to estimate right now. This event nationally is really attractive to the US market, and we are told that up to 1.5 mil- lion Americans have shown an in- terest in visiting the UK as a result of Mayflower 2020. The secret for us is to attract as many of these visitors to Dartmouth as we can, and members of the Dartmouth team have hosted visits from lit- erally dozens of travel journalists & tour operators over the last few months, all of whom have been really impressed with the town. Tour operators and cruise ship operators have already begun putting itineraries together, so we are expecting to see many more visitors than normal.

Q: Who is paying for all of these projects? A: Our funding is coming from a multitude of sources – grant funding organisations, commercial sponsorship, personal & commercial donations are the main ones. The Town Council has provided us with some seed funding which has been invaluable, and some events will be self funding, but we won’t pretend that funding isn’t a challenge - it is and we need all the financial support that we can get.

Q: What happens after 2020? A: Although the year’s commem- orations will have finished, we hope that our legacy projects, the Replica Ship, the Walking Trail and the Sculpture will last indefinitely. If we succeed in our plans, the town will have gained a much higher profile both nationally & internationally, which will result in increased visitor numbers and a much needed and ongoing boost to the economy of the town. Last but not least of course, we hope that this will be year that will be remembered for a long time to come.

Q: These projects and events are very ambitious – who is going to run them all? A: We have a brilliant manage- ment team, about 15 strong at present, but we are looking for more people to join us. This is a whole town project and we hope that all sections of the community will get involved, especially the schools, the festival groups, the clubs & societies in the town. The Britannia Royal Naval College has already provided a great deal of help and support which has been very much appreciated, and we hope that this will continue as we get closer to 2020.

A: How can people find out more? Q: There is lots of information on our website, www.dartmouth- mayflower400.uk. which is updat- ed regularly with projects and news and where people can sign up to receive our newsletter. As our plans gather pace, the news- letter will be published much more frequently and we will be using social media to keep every- one up to date with our plans as they change. Anyone with specific questions can email us at: projectdirector@dartmouthmay- flower400.org
