young people in their study of music. Students of guitar, piano, recorder, drums and, most recently, harp have benefited from the on- going success of the Music Festival over the last 20 years. Some of the primary schools now have drums and glockenspiels for all pupils to try. It is extremely important that
the Dartmouth community and the surrounding area, are given the opportunity to be part of that success and the Music Festival is determined to support the musical ambition of its young. These young people
are the future of the town and we must look to them to keep the Festival going and to encourage successive generations. Music is under threat nationally within schools and by helping children discover their music potential, we hope to keep the ethos of ‘Music for All’ at the heart of Dart Music Festival. 2017 was a splendid year
of workshops, bursaries and instrument purchasing and we would like to share this good news with the people of the town. Dartmouth Pre-school benefitted
from a portable keyboard, a wooden xylophone and a rhythm chest. The children from the school sent a ‘thank-you’ photograph and we believe you can’t start too early with the music. Francesca Heard is a budding

and talented harpist and singer who is taking her studies on to the next stage in her musical career. She performed at the Dartmouth Rock Choir’s Christmas Concert in December and received huge support from the town. Hollie James, with the help of
the Foundation, bought a recorder. She has now passed her Grade 5 and plans to take up the piano. We are extremely proud of Hollie and wish her well in her music studies. Ethan Barton is slightly older,
being at Brighton University at the moment. He is a very talented singer/songwriter and guitarist who will be appearing at the Dart Music Festival in May 2018. He will be on the stage for newcomers and original artists. Although Ethan has several guitars and can write his music, the technical equipment
was lacking so he applied for an interface, twin duo, and the Dart Music Festival Foundation were happy to support this application. Stoke Fleming Primary School applied for some funding to go towards drum repairs. This simple request enabled the school to ensure their music programme continued. St. John’s Baptist Church Primary
School is embarking on a mu- sic scheme in conjunction with Babcock Partners in Education. The Foundation will fund 20 weeks of instruction on the instruments that Babcock will provide. This project will establish the music base for the
school, which hopefully will contin- ue after the initial funding. The Dart Music Festival Foundation is very excited about this project, which will culminate in a performance at the end of the two-term project. Dartmouth Academy has
received musical support from the Foundation and recently received a letter of thanks with regard to the work and help given to students. As Anthony Chamberlain said: “The Academy has benefitted
greatly over the years from the music workshops that have been brought into school as well as the performances on the Bandstand to open the Festival on the Friday afternoon. The impact these musi- cal experiences have had on pupils over the years cannot be over emphasised; RSVP Bhangra inspired a great many Year 7 and 8 pupils to take up instrumental lessons so that they could perform on stage at some point in the future (that particular Year 7 group has now just completed their Year 11 GCSE exam and at one point there were 30 pupils in that Music class and they eventually went on to win the Devon Youth Music Battle of the Bands 2016).”•
