Kingswear Railway Station

Take a ride on a steam train

The award-winning South Devon Railway operates trains

throughout the day between Totnes and Buckfastleigh via Staverton and the stunning valley of the River Dart. It’s the longest established steam railway in the South West, running along a seven-mile former Great Western Railway branch line, originally built in 1872. New to this year is a special dining car serving Sunday lunch and delightful afternoon teas. These are lovely atmospheric events, complete with table lamps and linen, which run on selected Sundays throughout the summer. See www.southdevonrailway.co.uk for more details. And Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company runs along the wonderful picturesque line at the estuary to Kingswear and on top of the viaduct at Paignton along the coast. The company runs the ever-pop- ular Round Robin trips which take visitors between Totnes, Dartmouth and Paignton through an exciting combi- nation of steam trains, paddle steamers and open-topped buses. See www.dartmouthrailriver. co.uk for more information.

Indoor climbing

Steamtrain at Staverton

Indoor climbing has developed enormously in recent years

from practice walls for serious climbers to an enjoyable activity in itself, open to everyone including young children. Climb- ing centres now stock all the kit you need to just turn up and climb. Dart Rock at Buckfastleigh has been running for nine years and has walls for every level as well as a bouldering area – where you climb a low overhang with no ropes above safety mats; an artificial cave system; and an abseil station. They also serve delicious pizzas for a post climb treat. See www.dartrock.co.uk for more details. Or on Exeter Quay is the huge Quay Climbing Centre built in the city’s iconic historical electricity works. As well as the climb- ing walls there’s a dedicated novice zone and two boulder caves and training room. It also has a great café. Visit www.quayclimbingcentre.co.uk for more information.
