RESTAURANT of the MONTH

The Angel, Dartmouth

Readers will have noticed that The Angel restaurant on Dartmouth South’s Embankment has emerged recently from a long period of refurbishment. In its various iterations over the past 20 years or so, The Angel became one of the region’s most famous restaurants with national acclaim built by Joyce Molyneux and latterly John Burton Race. It has enjoyed a number of false starts since then but having being acquired by The Holland Group (the Station Restaurant, Dartside Holidays, Riverside Fashions etc) it has undergone a major refit and re-opened last month to growing acclaim for its bold approach to presenting high quality food at competitive prices in a comfortable and contemporary environment.

The Group is headed up by Operations Manager Angie Tracey, who is Bessie Holland’s niece and who has spent many happy childhood holidays in Dartmouth and has a real affinity with the town, having been involved in the business since childhood. Angie and her husband Mark moved down from the Midlands to Dartmouth in 2016 to assist Bessie in the development of the business. They are the ideal team with Angie’s business background and Mark’s expertise in building development and contract management.

Angie recruited a senior management team to help assist her and appointed Matt Palmer as Catering & Marketing Manager.

Matt – what’s the strategy behind this new incarnation of the restaurant? You’re currently seeing a major long term re-investment in all our

businesses across the town. What we’ve done with The Angel is the first step and then, in a couple of months, Platform One The Station will reopen as a major new bar and eaterie which we hope will

become a focal point for the town not just for visitors but residents as well.

At the same time, we are undertaking a major and ongoing

refurbishment of our 29 Dartmouth holiday properties – including two luxury apartments that will open soon above the Angel - and finally, we’ll be undertaking a major overhaul of our retail businesses.

The Holland Group are signaling a major vote of confidence in their businesses and the town, investing heavily in both, which I am sure will be widely welcomed.

What’s now different about The Angel? The restaurant has long been famous. We’re hoping to recapture some of that former

reputation. But we’re not trying to re-position it,

however, as a Michelin star

quality, high-end restaurant but as an accessible, relaxed and affordable place where really good food is served. Obviously, in a place like Dartmouth, we would naturally look to the sea for
