Caring is a victim of its own success as “people think we can do more than we actually can. We have gotten a bit of stick over the River View debacle,” says Nick. “Yes, we were one of the partners working together to plan its implementation but, sadly, have no role in its execution.” The local NHS and Social

Services infrastructure has made intermediate care a high priority. An extra 800 residents in Torbay and South Devon were given support in their home last year, reducing their time in hospital and freeing up over-stretched clinical resources. But Dartmouth’s isolation does mean that Dartmouth Caring has to adapt and expand it services to support these initiatives. This can be seen in the changes in the profile of its staff. For instance, Andie Day (an ex-Rowcroft Hospice specialist nurse) has joined the charity to support the health professionals as a Palliative Care and Cancer Liaison Nurse. This cuts down on the visits that need to made by GPs. Andie is

also now giving End of Life support - a lot of people who have life limiting conditions (but may not be eligible for hospice care) often need support with sorting their affairs, writing wills, arranging powers of attorney, ‘do not resuscitate wishes’, funeral planning etc. – Andie

It’s arguable that

advises on all this and also can direct clients to relevant counselling and professional services etc. She currently has 12 clients. The changing and developing

role taken by the charity will require support and advice from its trustees. Currently, there are just 5 but there will be a need for a few more. The charity will soon be advertising for these but any reader

that is interested and has relevant experience and expertise to offer should get in contact with Nick Hindmarsh. Dartmouth Caring are looking, in particular, for trustees in local villages, given the significant number of clients residing outside of Dartmouth. “The issues of rural isolation faced by the town are even more acutely felt by most of our surrounding villages. We want to hear readers’ views as we develop new services and seek to improve existing services to better meet the needs of our community,” comments Nick. Nick acknowledges that there is

“more to do as we get older! We go into 2018-19 as a charity that can respond rapidly to the impact of a vulnerable and aging population and how we help enhance their quality of life. Working in partnership with social services and the NHS ensures that we can assist our clients to live independently, safely and happily for as long as possible.“
