rooklands started the year in fine fashion with a superb New Year’s Day meeting where over 40 per cent of those who came along were Brooklands Trust Members – that’s 2,400 of you! You could see over 1,100 cars including those in a new ‘Modern Classics’ parking area, with plenty of classics from all ages elsewhere. Clubs supported the event as well, with good turn outs from the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club, Lancia Owners' Club, MX5 Owners’ Club and, of course, my own MGF Register. There was a big improve- ment in the catering with a bistro in the Napier Room and improved service for Club level mem- bers in the bar and Bluebird Room, plus more outlets around the site. Inevitably there were still queues but with nearly 6,000 people it would be impossible to do away with those altogether. The end of year membership figures were good with a noticeable increase in new members join- ing towards the end of the year coinciding with the opening of the new exhibitions. So much, in fact, that both October and November were all- time records for those months and November was the second highest ever for new people joining. There were around 6,252 memberships at the end of the year compared to 5,734 at the end of 2016, a net rise of nine per cent. That equates to around 10,880 card-holding members with 1,576 new memberships during the year – a hearty welcome to you all and we hope you are enjoying your first year with us. Our retention rate for existing members looks like being the same as last year at 77 per cent. A big thank you to all

members for staying with us and supporting the Museum. Your subscriptions amount to the third highest source of income to keep the Museum running and the extra fund-raising carried out by members contributes greatly to specific projects. Last year we saw the opening of the Scoreboard, which now dominates the Paddock, and it was made possible by funds raised by you. That brings us to our Winter Draw which, in 2017, was in aid of the purchase of new crowd barriers to make events as safe as possible. The brown plastic tubs arrived just before Christmas and were first used at the New Year’s Day event. On that occasion they weren’t filled with water
