Many readers will be aware that the Bloodhound
project has been going for some years and only recently were the first test runs made, with a partially complete vehicle at Newquay Airport. The record runs will be at Hakskeen Pan in South Africa which was identified after an extensive search across the world. Incidentally, it was the site of record attempts by Malcolm Campbell in 1929 and it took three months to clear the track of stones back then. However Bloodhound requires an area 40 times the size of Blue Bird’s – 18km long by 1,500m wide – which the team have managed to clear with the help of the
make no apology for naming this month ‘Mad March’! With a busy season ahead we start with the ‘Au Revoir Allan Winn’ evening on Thursday 1st March and if you have not reserved your free tickets already, I suggest you go on-line or call the BTM office at once. This could well be your last chance to ask the ‘Headmaster’ the question you have always wanted to… but were afraid to ask! On 15th March we will welcome Gillian Goldsmith and her subject will be the history of HWM (Hersham and Walton Motors). There will be a mix of a factual video that Gillian has recorded on the history of HWM followed by a question and answer session. For admirers of the local company, this is one not to be missed. On Monday 19th March not only do we change the method of transportation but we introduce a first for the BTM Talks programme in the shape of a one-woman play entitled Last Flight Out. This is the Amy Johnson story with the actor Jenny Lockyer and was very well received on Aviation Day last year. I do hope you will attend this event and give your support, I can guarantee you won't go away disappointed.

Our first Motor Sport Legends Talk for 2018 comes in the form of an interview by Simon Taylor with the former McLaren F1 driver and now stateside motor sport commentator David Hobbs. The date is Friday 23rd March and tickets are available on-line at
brooklandsmuseum.com/ members or via the BTM office 01932 857381 extension 226. Dropping in from 42,000ft will be the world

provincial government and local workers who have removed 16,000 tonnes of stones by hand. In October/November 2018 Bloodhound will run at Hakskeen for the first time with the aim of reaching a top speed of 500mph. Following that the speeds will be ramped up in two further visits, firstly to 800mph and finally to over 1,000mph and it is hoped these will take place in 2019 and 2020. Hopefully the Bloodhound team will return to Brooklands during that period to update us on the project’s progress. Further details about Bloodhound SSC can be found at

world without the use of machinery. An addition to our programme will be on 24th April. Karl Ludvigsen will talk about his new book Reid Railton: ‘Man of Speed’. with round the world biker Austin Vince. He is best known for his long-distance adventure motorcycle expeditions – twice round the world as part of the Mondo Enduro and Terra Circa trips, which were both featured in TV documen- taries. We expect to see all you Brooklands bikers on the night!
June 2018 marks the 110th anniversary of Alliot Verdon Roe’s flight trials here
at
Brooklands. To mark this occasion, on Thursday 7th June we will have an evening of ‘In Conversation with Eric Verdon Roe’. Our Wellington bomber ‘R for Robert’ was
lifted from Loch Ness some 33 years ago, so we think it’s about time we re-visited this remarkable Brooklands-built aircraft now that it has found its new home in the Aircraft Factory. Our Estates and Heritage Manager Julian Temple has offered to give a talk on the recovery and return to Brooklands of the iconic aircraft later this year. We hope to be able to use the Aircraft Factory as the backdrop for Julian’s talk. Watch out for details.
Just to remind you how to book and obtain tickets for both Classic and Motor Sport Legends events: Classic Talks via e-mail talks@brook-
