Hats, more flying balloons and the odd cracker joke (Gareth Tarr).

reckoned that he could make money from the colonials who would be happy to reward him for disrupting the ‘Old Country’. So he organised an attempt to blow up the British Naval Dockyards in Portsmouth. The terrorist act failed and James was executed, his body hanging from one of the ships in the harbour. Such was his notoriety that parts of his body and clothing were taken, with one enterprising landlord buying James’s head. After that there were several incidents that led to

the conclusion that James haunted the pub. The landlord called in the bishop to exorcise the ghost, but that only seemed to make the situation worse. In the end the landlord turned to a character referred to as ‘Old Ben’, who for a reward of mixed delights that included ‘three dozen oysters, three jugs of ale… and an apple’ managed to persuade the ghost into a bottle which he sealed with a cork.
