Member Section ...any other business A roundup of news from Chamber members
...any other business is designed to help satisfy the huge demand the Chamber gets from members seeking to publicise their activities in our publications. We have now moved company appointments to our daily bulletin, ChamberlinkDaily, which goes out every morning to nearly 17,000 business and individuals across the West Midlands.
A blossoming partnership
A PR and marketing company specialising in the home and garden sector has decided it is about blooming time it joined the Chamber – and so it has. Brookes & Co says it has enjoyed
a ‘great year of growth’ (which you would expect from gardening experts) and now it’s taking another step in getting its name out there by joining the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce. Brookes has 30 years’ experience
in developing marketing solutions for companies, taking in everything from web design to PR campaigns. Kate Newton said: “It has been
another busy year here at Brookes & Co with us seeing a number of new business gains and working on some exciting projects with our longstanding clients. “As the UK’s leading marketing
agency for the home and garden sector, we are thrilled to be joining the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce.”
Home and garden: The Brookes team getting ready for a spot of DIY and gardening Manufacturer makes fashion history
A 230-year-old Birmingham manufacturer – which makes cufflinks and accessories – cannot be accused of living in the past. That’s because Deakin &
Francis – run by brothers Henry and James Deakin – is not afraid to come out with bang up-to-date (and often outlandish) designs. The firm’s latest offering
fits this description – billed as ‘not for the faint hearted’, the cufflinks are the ‘Sterling Silver Savage’. Deakin & Francis describes them as ‘savage head

skull cufflinks’, but you can make your own mind up about what they resemble – could they be voodoo skulls, or maybe those strange looking ‘troll dolls’ with the combed-up hair that were a big fad in the sixties?
74 CHAMBERLINK February 2018 Either way, they are
certainly eye-catching. James Deakin says of them: “Our Sterling Silver Savage cufflinks have proven to be more popular than we could ever believe and so we felt it was time to take these designs to the next level of astonishing. “Our customers aren’t
shy – they like bold, unique and outstanding and so that’s what I aimed for when I re-vamped this design. “By adding the black
spinels they really will add a dark, edgy twist to any shirt cuff. So go on, show your inner boldness, I know I will.” The recommended retail price of these cufflinks is not for the faint hearted either – it is £580.
What may have been for Warburton
Rugby star Sam Warburton – who appeared at a charity luncheon event in Birmingham recently (see p65) – almost opted for a career with the round ball. He told the gathered company
that football was his first love – and despite being born in Wales, his parents are English, and big Tottenham Hotspur fans. In fact, so good at soccer was
Warburton that he had a trial with local club Cardiff City at the age of 14, but chose to concentrate on rugby – and that’s despite Real Madrid and Wales winger Gareth Bale being a school contemporary. Football’s loss was rugby’s gain,
with Warburton going on to be capped 74 times for Wales. However, it might not have been such a close call as it sounds, as he admitted: “I definitely would not have been good enough at football.”
