Apprenticeships, Skills & Training

Five reasons to provide apprenticeships

By Michael Kosmas (pictured), founder of NXG Group

The business arena can be merciless, extremely fast-paced and unforgiving, with nine out of 10 new businesses failing and more than a third of current businesses expected to close within the next 10 years. So, with these daunting statistics laid bare, why should you invest in apprenticeships for the younger generation? Having had the time to reflect on his own experience

in business Michael Kosmas, founder of the NXG Group, has a vision to provide employment opportunities to young individuals from diverse backgrounds and offer a platform for creative talent to flourish. He is aware of the “experience” obstacles facing the younger generation who are trying to embark on a career. Michael believes apprenticeships could be the answer, and below provides his five reasons why you should consider offering apprenticeships to the younger generation.

1. Combat skill shortages Apprenticeships can be a solution to bridging the UK skills gap facing the UK - you can prevent your business falling victim to skills shortages by training the younger generation through an apprenticeship programme. This in-house training means you can train the apprentice to your exact business methods without having to address any previous bad habits or alternative working behaviours from previous companies. Essentially, the apprentice is a blank canvas for you to adapt to your business’s needs.

2.Time saving benefits Apprenticeships are a great toolkit for businesses’ and budding entrepreneurs. They act as a time effective method for the younger generation to learn quickly from the more experienced and expand their horizons through hands on, first-hand experience. It is essential for the younger population to spend more time asking questions, doing and taking notes, rather than wasting time trying to find answers on their own with little practical experience. Apprenticeships are a collaborative, time effective process benefiting both the individual and the organisation.

3.Fresh ideas Inspire young people to aim high with an apprenticeship at your organisation. The younger generation have an enthusiastic outlook on the world and can add a splash of energy to a business, crucial in today’s competitive, globalised marketplace. They are often up to date with the latest technology and trends, eager to learn and contribute to discussions; all of which can bring a fresh outlook to your business with ideas that you may not have previously considered.

4.High return on investment Helping the future generation get their step onto the employment ladder with an apprenticeship will also provide high return on investment for YOU too. Apprentices feel very loyal and committed to the business that took a chance on them and gave them an opportunity. In the long run apprentices are likely to remain in your organisation resulting in a high return on investment on your initial training outlay. Employees that begin their career as an apprentice feel valued by the business and feel a strong connection to give back to the organisation that believed in them, resulting in a motivated, loyal workforce.

5.Affordability Apprenticeships are an affordable option to train new employees, thus it is a training option open to businesses of all sizes. With the current minimum wage rate for an apprentice at £3.50 per hour, which applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year, indicates how affordable this option is. There is also a range of Government support available for any employers looking to introduce apprenticeships, which makes the process even more financially viable for any employer.
