Time to listen: Steve Bavington
Excitation & Engineering Services are consultants to the power industry specialising in excitation control systems. Our business activity includes consultancy, training, design, commissioning, repair and servicing of excitation systems and associated equipment.
As a growing business we want to encourage new electrical engineers, taking on an apprentice would be an ideal starting point. In mid2017 we partnered with a local college to recruit, but this was unsuccessful. Some of the skills and attributes we are seeking include an interest in pursuing a career as an electrical technician or engineer in the power industry, an aptitude for practical science or engineering skills and good GCSE grades in Maths, English & Science. We will be advertising apprenticeship opportunities again in early 2018 with the hope of recruiting.

Providing a time and a place for workers to talk
The director of a support service for Birmingham’s business community believes the best way to ensure the city prospers and remains competitive is to help individual workers thrive. Colmore Row-based ChaplaincyPlus provides a confidential and neutral listening service for city workers who might be experiencing challenges. Formed in 2003, the charity is
based in the heart of Birmingham’s commercial district and provides a chaplaincy outreach service to several companies in the area. It also hosts events and talks featuring high-profile business and charity executives. ChaplaincyPlus is available to people irrespective of background or beliefs. Steve Bavington became director
four years ago. How would he describe ChaplaincyPlus to city centre workers who might not be familiar with what it can provide? “This is a charity that was set up to have time for people,” he said.
“We have time to listen through
one-to-one meetings. We run special interest groups and host events that help connect people.
‘This is a charity that was set up to have time for people’
“In a nutshell, we’re about well-
being. A lot of what we do is focused on helping people thrive. We know that when an individual thrives, the company thrives, and when the company thrives, the city thrives.” ChaplaincyPlus is hosting a talk
and discussion with international speaker Krish Kandiah called ‘Religion: Cause of Hate or Source of Peace’ on Wednesday, 7 February at the ICC, Birmingham.

A blinder of a member
Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce has been playing a blinder for local businesses over the past two centuries – just ask Tommy Shelby. In a recent episode of the hit
BBC drama Peaky Blinders, the leader of the Birmingham-based gang revealed he had “a meeting with the Chamber of Commerce”. And while details of Mr Shelby’s
meeting remain a mystery, the reference was a nod to the Chamber’s influence on Birmingham businesses since 1813. Nevertheless, we have
produced a certificate of membership to recognise the Shelby Company’s rightful place among Birmingham’s most recognisable businesses.
