Business News Your share of steam train history

Birmingham steam train charity Vintage Trains is offering the public a rare opportunity to buy its shares. It is the first time in 100 years that a steam train company operating

on the UK main line has made an initial public offer. Vintage Trains is a promoter of steam excursions, and also the

operator of Tyseley Locomotive Works, which looks after a collection of historic steam engines and carriages. The company has been running express steam train excursions to

traditional British destinations including York, Oxford, the Cotswolds and other tourism hotspots for a number of years, but now needs to raise £3m to secure the future of the historic trains that are used. The new publicly-owned company – Vintage Trains Limited - will

create up to 11 full-time jobs, and also has ambitions to create an apprenticeship and training scheme to preserve and develop locomotive and carriage engineering skills and keep alive the significant contribution made by Birmingham to the development of railways worldwide. The latter will see the revival of a famous name from Birmingham’s manufacturing past, Metropolitan Railway Carriage & Wagon Co. Ltd (MRC&W). Vintage Trains is aiming to make steam trains more accessible to all,

and the company hopes to improve public understanding of railways, engineering, heritage and Birmingham’s importance in the global railway industry. Michael Whitehouse, chairman of Vintage Trains, said: “This offer is

for everyone who believes there is magic in the sight, sound and smell of a steam locomotive pulling out of a station or hurtling across the countryside and for everyone who wants to experience the thrill. Together, we will create a new golden age, for new generations and put Birmingham back on the map as the hub for rail innovation.

There are people out there who won’t be partying and who will be only too happy to take advantage of you and your computers and steal your information!

Don’t invite them in! Keep your systems up to date. Install security software. Put passwords or passcodes on all your devices. And backup everything.

Stay safe and enjoy a wonderful festive season.
