Firm named as top patent filer

Intellectual property practice Marks & Clerk has been named the UK’s top patent filer, after filing the highest number of Patent Co- operation Treaty (PCT) applications between January 2014 and December 2016, according to new data published by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). Operating from offices across the

UK, including Birmingham, and with offices in France and Luxembourg, Marks & Clerk is also one of Europe’s top three filers. Marks & Clerk’s first-place ranking

highlights the increasing role of innovation in driving the UK economy. Innovators across the West Midlands in particular have filed nearly 400 European patent applications since October 2016. The most popular patent

application categories in the region include transport, electricity, engineering and building. Globally, an estimated 233,000

international patent applications were filed in 2016 – an increase of 7.3 per cent.

Of these, 5,496 applications were

filed in the United Kingdom in 2016, a 3.9 per cent increase from the previous year. Stephen Blake (pictured, inset),

managing partner of Marks & Clerk’s Birmingham office, said: “The fact that Marks & Clerk is again recognised as the UK’s top filer of PCT applications is testament to the expertise of our team, but also to the dynamism of the economy of the West Midlands and the wider UK. “With leading engineering firms

such as Horiba Mira putting the region at the forefront of the automotive sector, and initiatives such as the HS2 College and the forthcoming battery development facility in Warwickshire delivering the next generation of transport infrastructure, the West Midlands remains central to innovation in the UK. “It is great to be part of this

innovation, providing the businesses in our region with the international intellectual property protection they need to continue growing and investing.”
