School in tune for fundraising

A Birmingham school is doing all it can to foster its very own musical youth. Aston Manor Academy, a secondary school with

academy status, is determined that music will become a vitally important area of their pupils’ education. The academy is on course to boost its music department by raising money to buy a recording studio and marching drums – and a fundraising campaign has raised the £695 needed for the latter.

‘Music provides a platform for pupils to express themselves, explore their creative spirit and develop skills’

Louise Derrick, head of music at Aston Manor

Academy, said music education had been in decline recently, as the focus of school league tables had moved towards the English Baccalaureate (EBACC). She said: “Music provides a platform for pupils to

express themselves, explore their creative spirit and develop skills of leadership and independence that many other subjects cannot do. At Aston Manor we are proud to boast a department that is buzzing with ideas and opportunity for all our pupils.”

To raise the money the academy embarked on a

‘Fundraising Fiesta’ concert in October, with other events planned for this year. The academy is also keen to seek sponsorship from local businesses. Ms Derrick said: “Studies have shown music to be of enormous value to pupils development and in supporting the teaching of literacy and numeracy. It also has enormous value in itself. The music industry is diverse and varied and brings in billions to the UK economy and as such should not be undervalued or its budgets undercut.”

Small firms offered five-star maintenance

A Hednesford-based facilities management company has launched what it says is a ‘first’ in property maintenance, namely ‘pay-as-you-go support’. This means that occupiers who

need a lightbulb changing, for example, can get a professional to come along and do it for a fee, starting at £29 per hour. The new service is SSiReact Handyman Services, which has been launched by SSiFM of Keys Park Road, Hednesford. SSiFM director Chris Balmforth

said that the new service was aimed at helping small businesses and added: “I’ve been working in facilities management for over 20 years and it’s always puzzled me why there is a lack of professional property management for small businesses.” The new service is available 24

hours a day, seven days a week including plumbing, electrical work, plasterers and building services. Mr Balmforth added that smaller

jobs that were often considered a lower priority, such as hanging pictures and changing light bulbs, would get ‘five-star treatment.’
