Name: Clair Mowbray

Company: National College for High Speed Rail

Job Title: Chief Executive Officer

What does your company do? We’re the largest of five new national, employer-led colleges that have been created by the Government to ensure British workers learn world-class skills.

How did it all start? The Government originally announced the college in December 2014 and initial funding was approved in April 2014, with work beginning on our two newly opened campuses back in May 2016.

What’s your greatest achievement so far? Being the person who set up the first brand new Further Education College from a blank sheet of paper for over 30 years.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? Setting up the National College. Starting something from scratch, not knowing whether the industry or potential learners will truly get behind it. Our future is looking positive.

What keeps you awake at night? Ensuring all the decisions taken now create the environment for our growth in the future.

If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently? Get the resources a start-up needs secured before accepting the deadline.

What has surprised you most in your job?

The sheer enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated by my team, companies across the rail industry and our learners.

What advice would you give to someone starting out? Make sure you have a past-time that occupies you in a different way to the day job. You come back refreshed and able to think more clearly.

Which business do you most admire? As an employer-led college, we’ve had incredible support to date from a range of businesses who are proactively working to improve skills across the sector. It would be unfair to single any one out!

What exciting projects is your business working on? The training we’re currently offering in our augmented-reality classrooms is truly world-leading and as we build our capacity in 2018, we look forward to where this innovative approach to education will take us next.

What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? We’re an employer-led college so it’s fundamental that we engage with local businesses through the chambers of commerce. Or message is clear; if you need support with training and apprentices, we are here to help.
