HORNSEA ONE – THE STORY SO FAR
FEATURE SPONSOR
A GIANT IN THE MAKING
The Hornsea One project, located off the coast of Hull, sees the construction of one of the world’s biggest offshore windfarms. Once constructed the windfarm will be over 407 kilometres squared, consist of 174 wind turbines and be able to power well over one million homes
When considering how to deliver such a large scheme Ørsted, formerly DONG Energy, challenged its supply chain to develop innovative alternatives of delivery.
ONSHORE CABLE CONTRACT J. Murphy and Son’s Ltd, who is contracted to lay three 220kV onshore cable circuits over 38 kilometres on the project, embraced this challenge. Their project team drew on the vast and varied installation experience within the business as well as holding collaborative knowledge sharing meetings with other major European contractors.
Two key areas were identified early on as having the potential to significantly reduce risks and provide overall programme efficiencies. Firstly, the management, control and distribution of cable drums and secondly, the cable installation technique itself. The team experimented with several methods, manufactured a range of prototypes and conducted a series of trials before settling on the optimum alternative to traditional duct installation.
BESPOKE PROPRIETARY SYSTEM Murphy designed a bespoke proprietary system which used a direct cable laying method, not often used in the UK but commonly used across other European countries. NB An in-depth video of the cable installation on the Hornsea One project can be found through the interactive links at the end of this article
Through the support of specialists across the business and by engaging the workforce in the front-end process the project team were able to have confidence these ambitious new installation techniques would produce a practical system, capable of enhancing safety and programme efficiencies.

SAFE AND SUCCESSFUL DELIVERY Murphy’s Power Sector Director, Vince Bowler, said: “It’s a privilege for our business to be involved in the safe and successful delivery of the Hornsea One project and be able to demonstrate our extensive engineering capability. This major project aligns directly with our ten-year plan and our vision of improving life by delivering world class infrastructure.”
Murphy successfully installed the first cables in spring 2017 and have now safely installed almost 50% of the onshore cables. During peak times the team have regularly installed around 9000 metres of 22kV conductor per week. The Hornsea One project will be operational in 2020.
