DENMARK & THE HUMBER

SPOTLIGHT ON DENMARK

EXTENDED CONNECTIONS Meanwhile, Norway is providing more Scandinavian connections and the Netherlands is investing heavily in the industry along with Germany’s involvement, especially Innogy who are involved with Triton Knoll and Dogger Bank projects.

Mark added: “Norway was a big player through Statoil before taking a back seat for a while. But the development of floating turbines is whetting their interest again. They are suitable for deeper water and have high hopes for the world’s first floating windfarm off Peterhead.”

SCANDINAVIAN HISTORICAL LINKS The Humber’s links with Scandinavia go back more than a thousand years to when the Vikings harnessed wind power as they swept up the estuary, founding the settlement of Grimsby and leaving a footprint in the many other place names ending in ‘by’.

Even Hull’s distinctive accent is said to have Scandinavian influences. According to a best-selling 1920s travel writer: ‘The streets of Hull are full of Vikings. The men are fair-haired pirates; the women are blue-eyed Danes’.

EXCITING TIMES “It’s a very exciting time for the industry, not only in the North Sea, but elsewhere. We have more than 200 Team Humber member companies with expert knowledge and will continue to market the region on their behalf,” Mark concluded.

Team Humber is now planning for Offshore Wind Connections 2018, its sixth annual conference, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Hull on April 25 and 26 when it will welcome delegates from the UK, Europe and America to hear about the latest developments in the industry.
