SPOTLIGHT ON DENMARK

DENMARK & THE HUMBER

FEATURE SPONSOR

VITAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE HUMBER AND DENMARK

The confidence with which Team Humber Marine Alliance and Offshoreenergy.dk signed their ‘Agreement of future cooperation’ in 2015 has been more than justified by subsequent events

With turbines continuing to go up in the North Sea, along with major developments in onshore infrastructure and support services, it has become a golden age in the Humber’s relationship with Denmark.

FULL BENEFITS BECOMING APPARENT Although there had been a number of joint ventures between Danish and Humber companies before, the seeds for the agreement were sown on a UK trade mission to offshore wind sites and organisations in Denmark in 2013 and the idea of working together to reap the full benefits of the technology started to take hold.

It was clear that, as opportunities increased in the North Sea, closer cooperation would be required by supply chains to support every aspect of the industry. The aim was to bridge competencies and encourage companies into collaboration on projects for their mutual benefit.

LONG-TERM WIN-WIN AGREEMENT Mark O’Reilly, Chairman and Chief Executive of Team Humber, called it a ‘long-term, win-win agreement and commented at the time: “We want to tap into the expertise, knowledge and experience within Denmark’s offshore

wind industry to help us develop to our full potential, allowing projects and supply chain businesses on the Humber to thrive.”

Gustavo Ferraz de Luna, Project Manager for Offshoreenergy.dk’s Renewables division, concurred: “As the Danish offshore industry’s knowledge centre and innovation network, we have focused on establishing cooperation between Denmark and Britain. We consider Team Humber to be the perfect partner and signing the ‘memorandum of understanding’ was the first fruit of our closer ties.”

CONFIDENT WORDS History already shows these confident words were well placed. There has been increased collaboration, benefitting businesses in both countries, against a background of offshore wind gaining acceptance as one of the key green energies of the future, especially with the game changer of falling costs per megawatt hour making it more than competitive with other energy sources.

In fact, a public poll last year found it to be by far the most popular large-scale technology for our energy future. The agreement included both parties

sharing information on the offshore wind supply chain and market trends around the North Sea and providing a forum for companies, academia and research & development.

REMARKABLE PROGRESS Mark enthused: “It’s remarkable when you look at some of the world-leading firms now operating out of the estuary and see how quickly it is happening - it has been transformative for the Humber region. Through direct employment and in the supply chain, offshore wind is opening up thousands of good jobs.

“We can only see this continuing when you consider that there’s an estimated £23bn worth of North Sea wind investments to be fully or partially supported from the Humber ports up to 2023 and there are sure to be further developments in the longer term especially with Norway and Holland likely to have much greater involvement.”

Denmark was a pioneer in windfarm development but the UK now has more turbines in the North Sea, with the Humber at the heart of it.

WIND ENERGY GIANTS LEADING THE WAY

Siemens Gamesa and Ørsted were in the vanguard of the companies operating here and their presence has opened the way for others. With the Hornsea Project set to be the world’s largest offshore windfarm, the Humber continues to be a draw for fact-finding trips from other countries wanting to develop their own industries.

The relationship with Denmark has been a further attraction for the American groups Team Humber has welcomed, as they know they will be at the fountain of windfarm development knowledge.
