THIS MONTH’S COVER: In Stockholm’s ‘old town’ of Gamla Stan, the baroque German Church of St Gertrude contains a wonderful set of stained glass windows by Franz Xavier Zettler (1841-1916) installed between 1878 and 1911 which includes this beautiful Nativity scene Zettler founded his stained glass workshop in Munich in 1870 and developed a new process that involved painting the complete design on a large sheet of glass and then fixing the colours by firing at a very high temperature: this was so different from the ancient method of making stained glass that it is often called ‘painted glass’. The style, known as the ‘Munich School’, was much imitated and Zettler’s work won several gold medals in international exhibitions. In 1882 King Ludwig II granted his workshop the title of Royal Bavarian Art Institute for Stained Glass, and at the beginning of the 20th century, the firms of Zettler and his rival Mayer were the world’s leading producers of stained glass, employing nearly 500 craftsmen and artists between them. ‘Professor Franz’, as he was known to students and devotees alike, died in 1916 and in 1939 F.X. Zettler & Co. merged with its rival Meyer: the company continues to this day, run by a 5th generation member of the Mayer family. It has played an important role in preserving ancient stained glass throughout Europe, removing and safeguarding windows from great cathedrals and churches during two world wars, and restoring many windows damaged by weather and pollution. The company also takes on new commissions, now mostly in abstract style, for the secular buildings of large corporations all over the world. Nick Walmsley.
