WROXHAM WI It is good to know how money given to charities is spent and that is what Brenda Packman
came to explain at Wroxham WI’s October meeting. Each month some members give Pennies for Friendship which go towards the work of ACWW, the Associated Country Women of the World, established in 1930 to provide funds for projects which empower women worldwide. Schemes are activated in the country of origin and costs are usually no more than £2000 - £6000 but can make a huge difference to the lives of the women involved. Examples were given from different countries in East Africa and Tonga where a nursery and gardens were established which transformed food production. Each year Norfolk Federation holds a fundraising event for ACWW and some members from Wroxham WI have joined in the Blickling Walk. In early November Wroxham WI celebrated its birthday with a lunch at The Rising Sun, Coltishall. Over 30 members enjoyed the opportunity to chat and laugh together. On 8th December Wroxham members will join with other members of the Broadland Group for a Carol Party and provide part of the entertainment! The last meeting of 2017 is the Christmas Party and entertainment by Patsy-Rose on Wednesday 20th December at the Church Hall, Wroxham at 2.00 pm (note the earlier start}. A great way to relax before the Big Day. The first meeting in 2018 is on Wednesday 17th January at 2.30 pm. Visitors will receive a warm welcome.Wroxham WI sends Christmas and New Year greetings to all The Bridge readers. Jean Watson
BROADLAND CHESS CLUB “November news from Broadland Chess Club” In the league, Broadland Bitterns are currently lying in 3rd place in Division 1, the Swallowtails are 3rd and the Harnsers 7th in Division 2. Broadland has also launched its campaign to maintain its hold on the Norfolk and Suffolk Cup with a win against Norwich DONs and now go on to play Lowestoft in the next round. The new Broadland Friendly League also commenced this season and the Broadland Mallards are currently leading but with very few points separating the teams it is too close to call.
The in-house tournaments are also well on their way now, Roy Hughes and Ken McEwan as expected have both taken an early lead, while Tony Arnold is currently leading the Challengers section. In the Junior section, Benedict Ward is leading Section A, and Joshua Ward Section B. Jonathan Reeve has reached the final of the knockout cup and is awaiting confirmation of his opponent.
As always Broadland Chess Club looks forward to welcoming visitors and new members of any strength. We meet on Monday and Wednesday 7.30pm at the Kings Head in Coltishall. For further information find us on Facebook and Twitter, or our webpage.
