BROADLANDS ROTARY CLUB RAGAS: Rotarian Action Group Against Slavery There are an estimated 46 million in slavery according toWalk Free’s Global Slavery Index. That is four times the total taken out of Africa during the 400 years of the Atlantic Slave Trade! Rotary clubs from over 65 countries are involved in this initiative. Our member, Pat Hinkins, is an active co-ordinator in RAGAS. She is involved in work against the slavery and trafficking of children. We have also supported children in the Kinder Ward in Nottingham, which treats children with kidney disease and in need of transplants. The Falconer Trust is a new project in which goods are collected to send to a children’s home in Zambia established in 1947 by Lilias Falconer, a Nurse from Manchester.

Sponsoring Jessica on the RYLA Course (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) In October Jessica Pooley, from the Broadlands area, came to talk to us about her recent experience on this course. Members from North Walsham Rotary Club joined us, as the two Clubs were joint sponsors for Jessica. For East Anglia residents this is held at Grafham Water. Attendees are between 13 and 30 years and allocated into groups at the beginning of the week. Jessica recalled the first day with a smile: they had milked a cow and gone on a night walk together. They found after these activities they had bonded well which helped in the sailing and kayaking activity the next day, where all navigated for some of the time. The net result was getting lost and going past the centre on return! Next was the challenge of planning a new business in a day and a half! It included finance, marketing and sales. Just to add to the pressure there were initiative tests: spider’s web created by passing a ball of string across to team members in a circle, each retaining a hold on the string and balance seesaw which requires cooperation to ensure both stay on the seesaw! At the end each team presented to “Sir Frank Sweet” – a stand in for Sir Alan Sugar and one team was pronounced the winner. There were formal dinners, personal presentations and so much more. Jessica has made 8 incredible friends for life whom she feels have become more like family members. This team enabled her to change and develop during the week in ways she could clearly recognise. It gave her the confidence to go on and enrol on a Dog Training Diploma course, which is going really well. She has more confidence to interact through phone calls and meeting new people and she ended by saying, that before the course, she could not have given this talk in which she impressed us all. She then received her RYLA Course Certificate from our President.
