GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER AND JANUARY Over the next couple of months it’s a good time to try and finish those pressing jobs which have not yet been done. Tidy up your beds and borders, as best you can, removing those annoying weeds. Fork over the ground and add organic matter i.e. homemade compost or leaf mould. Cut down any remaining herbaceous plants that have finished flowering. Fill in any gaps, and divide those clumps that are getting too big. If you have any overgrown shrubs or hedges that are getting too big for the area they are in, cut back hard. The exception is conifers which cannot be cut back hard as they will not regrow. If you have planned to plant some new trees or shrubs this is a good time to do so. Bare root stock is available and a lot cheaper than container grown plants. If you are planting a tree, make sure it is suitable for its position first, and then firm it in before staking it. Keep clearing leaves and add to your compost heap. In the veg area, harvest sprouts, parsnips, leek and kale. Sow onions and broad beans. If your veg area is clear, dig over roughly and let the frost break the clumps down. If the weather is bad, catch up cleaning the greenhouse, including pots and trays. Clean the lawn mower, replace any worn parts or book it in for a service. Tidy the shed, oil and sharpen any tools. Go through and sort your seeds out and decide what to buy for next year. Have an enjoyable Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. Michael Ottaway, Chairman
