EXAM RESULTS 2017 Sibford celebrates Grade 9 results

Sibford School achieved its first grade 9s when the GCSE results were announced in August. The new grade, which has

currently only been introduced in English and Mathematics, is, according to Ofqual: ‘not the same as A*; it’s a new grade, designed to recognise the very highest performing students.’ Edward achieved a 9 in both English Language and English Literature; Rowena achieved a 9 in English Language and Jack received a 9 in English Literature. Meanwhile David and Mingjing gained a 9 in Maths. Toby Spence said: “The

government has said that the introduction of the new scale is to inject more rigour into the exam system. We had been warned that there would be far fewer grade 9s awarded this year compared to the number of A*s that were awarded last year, so for five pupils to gain this top grade was a fabulous achievement.”

Overall, Sibford students gained top grades (A* - A and 9 - 7) in Art, Biology, Chemistry, Drama, English, French, Geography, History, ICT, Mathematics, Media, Music, PE, RS, Russian, Additional Science, Applied Science, Statistics and Textiles. Speaking about his two grade 9s Edward, who also achieved a grade 7 in Mathematics (equivalent to an old A grade), four A*s and three As

said: “I’m relieved .. and shocked. I didn’t know what to expect with the new grades but I certainly didn’t think I’d get two 9s.” He is pictured above with Toby Spence and mum Sandra. In other exam news ... 2017 saw 16 Year 10 students sitting their GCSE General Studies exam a year earlier than most. Special congratulations go to Finley and Jacob, who both gained A*s, and William and Iain, who received A grades. (Jacob is pictured receiving news of his success while on the beach in Cornwall!) All of our horticulture students

were given a full Diploma in their City and Guilds Level 1 Horticulture Practical Skills. Congratulations to Mingjing, Toby, Dominic, Louis, James and Leyland.

Sibling success

Two brothers gained a GCSE in Computer Science … despite both being under the normal age for sitting the exam. Fifteen-year-old Sibford pupil Harvey Edwards gained an A in his paper while his 12-year-old brother, Harold, gained a B. Harvey’s success was magnified by the B grade he achieved in GCSE General Studies. Harvey said: “I’m delighted with my results and I

now go into Year 11 knowing that I already have two GCSEs.”
