this world!

being ‘Out of this World!’ Over the following five weeks pupils split the infinitive to boldly go on a journey into space.

Nursery children ended up covered in sparkles from moon dust and were challenged to build a space model from Duplo or Lego. Year 1 and 2 zoomed into their topic by

investigating the planets of the solar system. Year 3 investigated how rockets manage to defy gravity and push into space. They also enjoyed writing rhyming planetary poetry. Year 4 debated the differing views of Aristotle and Galileo and Year 5 found out about the discovery and uses of the telescope, learnt about the Solar System and compared some explanations for how the World began Year 6 created Russian style 1960’s posters about

Yuri Gagarin and heard about RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk, a famous site for UFO sightings. Highlight of the topic was when the whole school,

apart from nursery, visited the National Space Centre in Leicester. Meanwhile, our youngest children had fun unleashing their inner shooting stars as they enjoyed exclusive use of Rugrats & Halfpints Sensory and Soft Play centre in Banbury. Edward Rossiter said: “The children had a fabulous

day at the National Space Centre with lots of hands on activities. They explored the solar system, undertook astronaut training and created a timeline of the conquest of space. Some even got to handle real space rock and the girls were particularly pleased to find out that NASA testing indicates that, across a range of measures, women are better suited to being astronauts than men!” Year 6 pupil Alex added: “It was

amazing! We got to go to the rocket tower (which was 42m high!) and went in a cool glass lift to the 4th floor! Some of us went in a pretend shuttle and we also visited the planetarium which was awesome!” Creative Curriculum ‘Out of this World!’ culminated with a ‘Fabulous Finish’ where the children showed some of the things they had been working on to their parents.
