Autumn Splendour

Advice for gardeners from Chestnut Nursery Great news, it’s still only

the middle of autumn. However, winter is hot on our heels and recent weather has certainly been reminding us so.

This time of year reaffi rms the importance of charity projects such as ours. If you didn’t already know,

we are a mental health charity supporting adults with mental illness by providing meaningful work in a stress-free horticultural environment. Having a purpose and place to go during the seemingly bleak days of winter is a lifeline for many. We are also here for the wider community, providing an ever increasing range of seasonal crops, grown by us, for you to enjoy in your home or garden.

Don’t put your spade and trowel down just yet! Look out for our winter fl owering shrubs, such as lonicera fragrantissima which produces fragrant, creamy-white fl owers in mild spells between December and March. Mahonia ‘winter sun’ does well, with slender spikes of bright yellow fragrant fl owers from November to March. New and unusual is ageratina ligustrina (pictured) from South America. One of the very best plants for attracting bees and butterfl ies, this hardy evergreen will fl ower until Christmas in mild weather.

As always, we are growing and stocking a wide range of bulbs and winter bedding to include violas, pansy, cyclamen, primroses and wall fl owers. Get your bulbs and winter bedding planted now, ensuring a brilliant display throughout the winter and into spring.

Our keen volunteers take great pride in the plants they grow and love seeing the joy they bring to all. Do please pay us a visit, we are always happy to advise.
