It’s hard to believe that I am already thinking about Halloween and the nights drawing in, but it seems that summer is now long gone.
My children really enjoy spending the evening of 31st October out visiting our neighbours in their scary costumes, but I know many people worry about that unexpected knock on the door.
A lit pumpkin or other decorations is an invitation for a visit, so if you have your stock of sweets by the door make sure its out nice and early. The younger children tend to come around between 4pm and 6pm and will usually be in a larger group with parents waiting at the roadside. I know of people who have sat patiently in their homes with a stash of Haribos and no visitors, because parents couldn’t see any indication that the resident was joining in the fun.
If you DON’T want a visit, it’s always helpful to put a polite note on your door and if you do get a knock, don’t feel obliged to answer – young people will simply assume you are out or that you aren’t playing along. I get a lot of visitors at my home and its usually the same characters, but I always give short
shrift to the older kids who don’t bother to dress up! It’s not an excuse for free sweets so DO make the effort if you expect residents to cough up... and why not offer your older children to accompany younger siblings or dress up at home to give out sweets.
NEVER Trick-Or-Treat alone, make sure your children stick to a route if parents aren’t tagging along and go out early – not only is it more socially acceptable before 7.30pm, but residents are likely to have run out of sweets!
Finally, do you live around the Higher Blandford Road area and could you spare 10 minutes once a month, and an hour once a year? Could you be a ‘contact,’ delivering the newsletter to around seven or eight homes and collecting the annual subscription? If so, please get in touch.
